Aircraft 337's

The FAA keeps a record for each aircraft in their computer system called an airworthiness file.  This file contains the 337's which have been sent in.  While this is not a complete record of any work or damage, it is certainly a place to start your research or at least supplement it.  Of course looking at logs books, checking the NTSB and the FAA Incident list are all something that should be done, looking over the airworthiness file of the aircraft is also a great way to see if any damages have occurred, and you can also possibly find out some information about other items pertaining to the aircraft, such as electronics or when other particular work was done.  Nobody can ensure that this record is complete and contains all you would expect, but as I said, it acts a good supplement to other procedures and research.
